Q. What Memory and Drives fit my iMac Intel?

Apple has released a variety of iMac intel machines, which have used four different kinds of RAM. Different models of iMac have had either two RAM sockets or four RAM sockets. In iMacs, installing a single RAM is permissible, however installing a matching pair allows Dual Channel memory access, which has a small (6%-8%) but welcome real-world speed improvement. There is no need to match all four modules of memory in a 4-slot iMac, you can have two pairs of different sizes. Following is a chart of all iMacs and their RAM module types and capacities.
Installing RAM in an iMac

Installing hard drives in an iMac requires disassembling the machine and should be attempted only if you have experience. See this link.

8 Responses to Q. What Memory and Drives fit my iMac Intel?

  1. John Turnau says:

You do not seem to have the Memory Modules I need

I have an iMac late 2017 27″ with the following SO-DIMM memory modules,
    PC4-2400 (192000)
    Unbuffered
    Nonparity
    260-pin
    2400GHz DDR4 SDRAM

Do you 2 x 4GB Memory modules of this type available?

    Please advise

    • quill says:

      Hi John
Thanks for the note, CanadaRAM does carry the memory for your machine, and I have updated this page with the latest models of iMac now

  2. Keith Wilson says:

I have a late 2015 21.5 iMac, do you have 32 go Ram and screen removal tool for this?

    • quill says:

From EveryMac.com : The iMac “Core i5” 2.8 21.5-Inch Aluminum (Late 2015/Broadwell) features a 14-nm “Broadwell” Quad Core 2.8 GHz Intel “Core i5” processor (5575R) with four independent processor “cores” on a single chip, a 4 MB shared level 3 cache, 8 GB of onboard 1867 MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM (which could be upgraded to 16 GB at the time of order, but cannot be upgraded after system purchase at all),

  3. Richard Sparks says:

Do you have the RAM to upgrade my iMac 27 late 2013
from 8GB to 16GB? How much is that? and can you do the installation?

    • quill says:

      Hi Richard
You can contact sales@canadaram.com for the quote. You have 4 memory sockets, if you have 8 now, is it 2 x 4 GB modules? As of Nov 25 2019, the DDR3-1600 RAM for the Late 2013 for 2 x 4 GB additional is $64 in DMS Certified brand, $54 in OWC brand,
for 2 x 8 GB (16 GB additional to your 8 ) it would be $91 DMS or $97 OWC plus tax and shipping depending on your location.

  4. Robert Silverman says:

    Hi.

    My computer is a iMac Retina 4K, 21.5-inch from 2019. Processor is a 3GHz 6-Core Intel Core i5. 8 GB 2667 MHz Memory DDR4.

It’s slow as hell. Can anything be done to speed it up or should I dump it and make a smarter purchase? In the past I added memory myself to a laptop without problems, but I basically have five thumbs instead of fingers.

    Many thanks.

      Hi Bob
The iMac 2019 is a fine machine, with a nice screen. The Intel i5 6 core 3.0 GHz processor is the entry level for iMac, but it is quite sufficient for office and personal work. If you are editing videos or 3D modelling on the machine, I would suggest trading up for a faster model, which comes at a price of course.

Your first issue is 8 GB RAM – this is barely enough for OSX and if you are multitasking a lot, or using the Adobe image programs, or even opening a lot of tabs in Chrome, you’re going to run into heavy virtual memory use, which slows the machine dramatically. The second thing we don’t know is what your drive set up is, do you have a “Fusion” drive set, with a spinning hard drive and a very small SSD cache?

You can upgrade the RAM in this machine as far as 64 GB. Without knowing what you do with the machine, I cant say but 16 GB or 32 GB may be appropriate.

Canadaram.com also carries the tools and the special adhesive kit for reinstalling the screen

If you have a Fusion drive set, you can back up the drive (Mandatory) then break the Fusion set which severs the connection between the cache SSD drive and the spinning hard drive (and deletes all data). Then you can upgrade the SSD to a larger, high speed PCI-e NVMe SSD drive, and use that as your main drive, while keeping the spinning 1 TB drive as a secondary volume. This will improve drive access speed substantially, for faster performance boooting, loading programs and saving data. SSD NVMe drives are here https://canadaram.com/ssd_mac10.htm. While you could also replace the hard drive with a 2.5 inch SATA SSD drive, the improvements would be a bit more modest.

Upgrading the machine is not a walk in the park, the screen has to be delaminated from the body to access the internals. This is recommended to be left to an experienced professional. Video instructions here: https://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/iMac-21-inch-2019/?filter=memory
